Photo #123 of 365 - Monument Valley, Arizona
Monument Valley is located on the southern border of Utah in northern Arizona close to the Four Corners region. This valley is a section of the Colorado Plateau and is marked by a group of iconic and huge sandstone buttes. The largest of these reach a height of 300 meters above the valley floor. The buttes in this valley are distinctly stratified and have three main layers. The bottommost layer is Organ Rock shale, the layer in the middle is de Chelly sandstone and the layer at the top is Moenkopi shale.
